McDonald’s Corp. targeted by cryptocurrency scammers – Instagram account hacked

The famous fast food corporation McDonald’s has fallen victim to a crime that has shaken the world of cryptocurrencies. The official company account on Instagram was hacked by individuals who decided to promote a cryptocurrency scam named after a character from the McDonald’s universe – Grimace. This incident is a clear example of how cybercrime can impact even the biggest and most well-known brands in the world.

Changes on McDonald’s Instagram account

The individuals responsible for the hacking attack not only took control of McDonald’s account on Instagram, but also made several changes. They altered the company’s bio to a message promoting a „rug pull” scam, a technique to exploit funds from investors in the cryptocurrency market. Posts on the account included information about alleged profits of $700,000 in Solana cryptocurrencies, along with a cryptocurrency wallet address. All of this was presented in the context of a mysterious „McDonand’s experiment on Soluna.”

What is a „rug pull”?

„Rug pull” is a malicious tactic involving quickly generating interest in a new cryptocurrency token, and then suddenly pulling all liquidity from the market, leaving investors with worthless assets. This manipulation can lead to huge financial losses for individuals involved in a particular project.

Consequences of the GRIMACE token scam

The scammers who hacked McDonald’s account managed to increase the market capitalization of GRIMACE tokens to $20 million before the fraud was exposed. After the crime was uncovered, this value plummeted below $1 million, resulting in significant losses for investors.

„Pump.fun” platform and cryptocurrency memes

The GRIMACE token was generated through the „Pump.fun” platform, which enables the creation of cryptocurrency memes on the Solana blockchain. Since the beginning of the year, over 1.8 million cryptocurrency memes have been created on this platform, attracting growing interest among cryptocurrency users.

McDonald’s response and warning against cyber threats

McDonald’s confirmed the incident on their social media, apologized for the offensive content, and assured that the issue has been resolved. Steve Graham from EC-Council pointed out that this incident serves as another warning for companies that no entity, not even a corporate giant, is immune to cyber threats. Companies must invest in security measures and provide proper training for employees to protect themselves from financial and reputational losses resulting from such attacks.
