Revolutionary fight against packaging pollution in Egypt: SIG project, Plastic Bank, and GIZ

SIG, Plastic Bank, and GIZ partner to combat packaging pollution in Egypt using blockchain technology, supported by the German Ministry. The project aims to enhance recycling infrastructure, incorporating an Extended Producer Responsibility system with incentives for waste pickers. Through the Plastic Bank app, pickers benefit from rewards, social support, and safety measures, driving positive change in Egypt's waste sector.

SIG, Plastic Bank, and GIZ Join Forces to Combat Packaging Pollution in Egypt

Collaborating with Plastic Bank and the German development agency GIZ, SIG has initiated a project utilizing blockchain technology to address the issue of packaging pollution in Egypt and improve the living conditions of local waste pickers. This initiative aims not only to rebuild recycling infrastructure in Egypt but also to ensure the safety and proper incentives for the waste collection team members.

Support from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development

The project, funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) through the „develoPPP” program and the „Decent Work for a Fair Transition” initiative, has garnered top-level support. The partnership between SIG, GIZ, and Plastic Bank seeks to catalyze positive changes in Egypt by creating an Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) system and integrating recycling into Egypt’s legal framework.

Positive Changes in Egypt’s Waste Sector

Within the three-year project, the partners plan to collect up to 700 tons of beverage cartons and improve the living conditions of around 1000 local waste pickers. The Plastic Bank app, based on a secure blockchain platform, offers transparency and traceability in the waste collection process, enabling waste pickers to convert waste into revenues.

Support for Pickers and Their Families

Pickers receive rewards for each item collected through the app, with the funds deposited directly into their digital wallets. Additionally, they gain access to various social benefits such as health, life, and occupational insurance, digital connectivity, vouchers for groceries, and essential educational materials.

Support and Safety for Pickers

To ensure the safety of the pickers during work, they receive support in the form of training and proper protective equipment. Through such initiatives, it is not only possible to reduce packaging pollution but also to improve the living conditions of waste pickers in Egypt.
