Hacker Attack on Twitter – Ethereum in Danger
EigenLayer – Ethereum Developer, Falls Victim to Twitter Hack
The developer of the Ethereum sharding protocol, EigenLayer, has recently reported that unknown hackers have taken over his account on the social media platform Twitter. This incident has sparked a wave of reactions among cryptocurrency users, who were exposed to scammers using fake airdrops. EigenLayer has assured that steps are being taken to secure his profile and warn users against suspicious links.
Suspicious Posts Advertising a Fake Airdrop
Suspicious posts promoting a fake airdrop appeared on EigenLayer’s compromised account, aiming to lure victims of the scam. These messages encouraged Twitter users to click on a link leading to the Eigen Foundation website, which turned out to be a phishing trap.
Security Threat to Users
By clicking on the suspicious links, users were at risk of having funds stolen from their cryptocurrency wallets. At least one individual lost as much as $800,000 by granting access authorization on the fake website. EigenLayer urges all users not to interact with suspicious links and to verify their authenticity, especially checking for the 'eigenlayer.xyz’ domain.
Scammers’ Tactics
The attackers employed various manipulation tactics, such as posting entries with cute animal pictures to deceive potential victims and prompt them to click on the scam link. The first post informing about the transfer of EIGEN tokens from the Season 2 EigenLayer airdrop appeared around 7 a.m. Eastern Time.
EigenLayer’s Response and the Crypto Community
Although the deadline for claiming Season 2 airdrop rewards ended last month, EigenLayer is advising users to remain vigilant and cautious. It is currently unclear whether the company has regained control of its Twitter account, leaving the cryptocurrency community on edge, awaiting further developments.
Lack of Immediate Response from Eigen Labs
Despite numerous requests for comments regarding the incident, Eigen Labs has not provided an immediate response to media inquiries seeking clarification. The lack of information about the actions taken by the company is raising concerns among Ethereum users and other cryptocurrency enthusiasts regarding their online security.
